About the company
Faxaflóahafnir sf. (the Associated Icelandic Ports) was established on 1 January 2005. The company is responsible for harbour activities in Gamla höfnin í Reykjavík (the Old Reykjavík Harbour), Sundahöfn, Grundartangi and in Akranes, as well as facilities for smaller boats in Borgarnes. Faxaflóahafnir sf. bases its operations on a 100-year history of port management, which is, at the same time a remarkable and major part of the history of the municipalities involved in the company.
Without a harbour, Reykjavík and Akranes would undoubtedly have developed completely differently, as their history of community and working life is intertwined with the port operations. The company Faxaflóahafnir sf. is owned by five municipalities: Akranesskaupstaður, Borgarbyggð, Hvalfjarðarsveit, Reykjavíkurborg and Skorradalshreppur.
What makes the company unique is that it is a key player in the development, improvement and operation of important infrastructure in the transport network and the economy of Iceland. Companies have always sought facilities in the areas owned by Faxaflóahafnir sf., and, in Reykjavík, land and site preparations have always been a major part of its operations from the very beginning.
Aside from fishing vessel operators, transport companies and marine-based industries, large and small, recent years have seen considerable growth in marine-based tourism operations.
This growth has led to vibrant, bustling life and culture in the area. On the whole, therefore, the harbour is a fisheries port, tourism port, leisure activities port and a cultural port. Diverse facilities provide the company with ample room to expand in many areas of daily life and can, on such foundations, benefit its owners, the public and the business sector.
